When it comes to choosing a plumber in Chicago, you want someone who you can trust and trust to get the job done right.  Right? After all, it’s your pocketbook and your home that are at stake, so the least you can do is make absolutely certain that the professional you’re bringing into your home will actually bring expertise and value.  So, what actually makes a good plumber? Let’s take a closer look at what you should look for as far as qualifications:

  • License – This one’s kind a no-brainer, but you should always double check that your plumber is licensed, as most states require working plumbers to be licensed.  In addition to a license, you’ll want to be sure that your plumber has a clean complaint record. Take the time to do some research, and find out if the plumber or company that you’re hiring has any formal complaints filed against them.
  • Experience – The best plumbers and companies have experience on their side.  So, find out how long the plumber or business has been in operation as well as how many years of experience each worker has.  Keep in mind that it takes years of training and education for most good plumbers to acquire their knowledge and skills.
  • References – Most people don’t think to do so, but in times when you’re either completely unsure of what you’re getting into or are on the fence, ask a potential plumber for references of people for whom he or she has done work.  Then, take a moment to call around to find out whether or not those customers were happy with the work.
  • Insurance – Even if you have homeowner’s insurance that offers some level of protection, your plumber should have workman’s compensation and at least $500,000 of liability insurance.  This will protect everyone in the event that a worker incurs an injury while on the job at your home.
  • Clear Communication – This one can be a little tricky to gauge until you’re face to face, but it is nonetheless important to consider.  It is to everyone’s benefit to have a plumber who can clearly communicate with you throughout the process so that you know exactly what’s happening in your home.  You also want to work with someone who is trustworthy and has good work habits, such as maintaining a clean work environment, showing up on time, etc.
  • Warranty – You only want to work with a plumber who will guarantee his or her work and the parts for at least a year.

The Types of Plumbers in Chicago

In addition to the above-mentioned qualifiers that make for a good plumber, you should also be aware of the main qualification levels of plumbers.  As with many other industries, there are in fact different levels or types of plumbers.  Those are:

  • Apprentice Plumbers – An apprentice is a plumber who is training with a union or nonunion contractor organization.  Their training consists of both classroom instruction and paid hands-on work. They typically observe, aid and work alongside a journeyman or master plumber.
  • Journeyman Plumbers – Journeymen are plumbers who have fulfilled their requirements of apprenticeship and obtained a state journeyman license.  They can do most kinds of plumbing work, but they rarely operate their own business. In Chicago, you may hear people refer to union plumbers casually as “the Journeymen”.
  • Master Plumbers – Master plumbers are the most qualified and run their own businesses.  They’ve completed several years of work as a journeyman, usually have in-hand an associate’s degree from a vocational school, and have passed all written and hands-on exams.  They can handle all types of plumbing tools.
