When it comes to your home, you should feel like the king or queen of the realm. You are the one who sees all and knows all. At least, that’s how some of us might see things. The question is, though, are you the master of all plumbing maintenance as well?
Of course not! That is unless you’re actually a professional plumber. As an ordinary homeowner, however, you’re just not going to know everything about the inner workings of your home’s major systems. Fortunately, that’s why you have us. We’re here, just one call away, to help you make sure that your home’s plumbing is in top working order.
Basic Plumbing Tips for Chicagoland Home and Business Owners
At Tritan Plumbing, we prefer to take a proactive approach to the care and maintenance of your home. So, we thought we’d share a little knowledge with you so that you can avoid making those all-too-common rookie mistakes. From our team to your home, here are a few things that we recommend you try to avoid.
- Avoid using too many plumbing fixtures at once – It’s pretty likely that we’ve all been guilty of this one from time to time. You try to throw in a load of laundry while you also run a full dishwasher cycle. It’s a modern age; we’re used to multi-tasking. That doesn’t necessarily mean that your plumbing systems are up to the job, however. Have you ever started a wash cycle and then tried to take a nice, hot shower? We’re betting it didn’t turn out the way you hoped. The water pressure was probably significantly lower, and you may have even run out of hot water altogether (depending on your water heater). Now, these aren’t exactly the makings of a relaxing shower, but what’s more is that your clothes and perhaps even your dishes may have suffered as well since there wasn’t enough hot water and pressure to fuel all three.
- Avoid putting everything down your drains – Putting things down drains that don’t belong there can be a major plumbing mistake. Drains are only equipped to handle things like flushing toilet paper, toothpaste from brushing your teeth, putting the proper food scraps through the garbage disposal. These are all regular things that your system can handle. Unfortunately, most households don’t abide by these regulations. Too often people try to put things like toiletries down toilets, grease down kitchen sinks, hair down the bathtub drain, etc. Your pipes are not equipped to handle these disposals! They will lead to buildup and possible cracks down the road if not properly cared for. So, make sure that nothing goes down your drains except for the usual business.
- Avoid making repairs without knowing what you’re dealing with – Sure, we all fancy ourselves DIY experts from time to time, but plumbing is nothing to be taken lightly or on a whim. If it’s an easy repair, and you know exactly what you’re doing, then have at it. But, if you’re not sure or have hesitations, just don’t try to do it on your own. You may just end up breaking something, causing more damage than what you started with. We’ve all heard the saying, “if you don’t know, let it go.” Instead, let your trusted plumbing professionals handle it for you.
